A court in Georgia has sentenced former President Mikheil Saakashvili to nine years in prison in a case of embezzlement of about 9 million lari (more than $3.2 million). This was reported on March 12 by the Mtavari TV channel.

Saakashvili was charged with embezzlement of state funds in 2014. According to the Prosecutor General's Office, a significant part of this amount was spent in 2009-2012 on the personal needs of the politician.
