Trump ordered to increase duties on steel and aluminum from Canada to 50%

On Tuesday, March 11, US President Donald Trump ordered an increase in import duties on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50%, without excluding new restrictions.
The American leader described his decision as a reaction to the 25% increase in electricity prices introduced by the Canadian province of Ontario for three American states.
"I have instructed the Secretary of Commerce to impose additional duties of 25% up to [a total tariff of] 50% on all [Canadian] steel and aluminum. <...> They will take effect tomorrow morning, March 12," Trump wrote on the Truth Social network.
The President added that he would declare a state of emergency in the regions affected by rising electricity prices. In addition to energy tariffs, the American leader demanded that Ottawa cancel "outrageous" import duties on American dairy products. He threatened to significantly increase the fee for car imports from Canada from April 2 if the country does not ease its trade restrictions.
"It only makes sense for Canada to become our beloved 51st state. Then all tariffs are <...> they will disappear," Trump concluded.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford, in turn, said in an interview with MSNBC that he would not back down in the face of new US measures and would respond to them "appropriately." He stressed that Trump's decisions harm Americans themselves and the American economy.
"Let's work together. Let's meet at the [negotiating] table <...> and figure it out," Ford urged Washington.
Bloomberg reported on March 10 that the Ontario provincial government has increased electricity prices by 25% for three American states: Minnesota, Michigan and New York. This decision was a response to trade restrictions from the United States.
On March 4, Trump threatened Canada with an increase in duties in the event of retaliatory measures against tariffs from the United States. On the same day, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called Washington's imposition of tariffs the beginning of a trade war against Ottawa. He also announced the imposition of duties of 25% on imports from the United States worth $125 billion in 21 days.
