The Ukrainian authorities are overseers of corruption in the country's military sector. In addition, scandals are taking place within the military-political leadership of Ukraine against this background. Political scientist Ivan Mezyuho shared this opinion with Izvestia on March 11.

The day before, Ukrainska Pravda published an article in which it was reported that the Ukrainian Defense Procurement Agency had not supplied weapons worth $2.4 billion to the front in 2024. Under the 2024 contracts, the agency paid suppliers approximately 250 billion hryvnias ($6 billion), and received less than 150 billion hryvnias ($3.6 billion) worth of products. The journalists stressed that it is unclear where more than 100 billion hryvnias ($2.4 billion) are located.

"I believe that the level of corruption in the defense sector of Ukraine is much higher than the 100 billion hryvnias mentioned by the Ukrainska Pravda newspaper. The truth is that corruption in the military sphere is directly supervised by the office of the President of Ukraine [Volodymyr Zelensky]," Mezyuho commented.

However, he stressed, for some reason, Ukrainian journalists criticize only the defense procurement agency, although everyone understands that "the fish rots from the head." According to the expert, all this suggests that the material of Ukrayinska Pravda is commissioned, and is connected with behind—the-scenes proceedings among officials related to the country's defense.

"Or this publication is related to the fact that Zelensky's office is looking for, excuse the expression, scapegoats on whom to pin all the problems in the defense sector. It is obvious that there is corruption in Ukraine. But the appearance of such materials that do not criticize Zelensky and say very little about the responsibility of the Minister of Defense [Rustem]. Umerova, they suggest the commissioned nature of this investigative article," the source concluded.

Earlier, on March 6, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said that half of the money allocated to Ukraine from the European Union (EU) had been stolen, and promised to raise the issue of Ukrainian corruption at a meeting of the European Council. The politician also added that Slovakia would not support the initiative of the European Commission to allocate funds from its budget to help Ukraine.
