Depression can be mimicked by hypothyroidism, a thyroid disease characterized by apathy, fatigue, mood swings, drowsiness, and impaired memory and concentration. Shalala Pashayeva, an endocrinologist at Invitro, told Izvestia about this on March 13.

"In addition to changes in the emotional state of hypothyroidism, patients may be concerned about the appearance of puffiness, weight gain, dry skin, chilliness, increased hair loss, constipation, and menstrual irregularities in women. The disease is also characterized by a decrease in heart rate and an increase in blood pressure," she noted.

Also, Pashayeva added, hyperthyroidism can lead to anxiety and irritability, sleep disorders in the form of insomnia. This is often mistaken for depression.

"With hyperthyroidism, in addition to anxiety and irritability, complaints may also include palpitations and high blood pressure, sweating, and a feeling of 'inner trembling,'" the doctor added.

When getting rid of thyroid diseases, the patient's psychoemotional state returns to normal, concluded Pashayeva.

On February 11, Anna Teplova, a doctor and assistant at the Department of Endocrinology at the Institute of Clinical Medicine (ICM) of the Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University, told Izvestia about hypothyroidism hidden behind the symptoms of other diseases. So, according to her, complaints of dry skin, hair loss and brittle nails can indicate it.
