The number of medium-sized companies in Russia has reached a record high

There are almost 21,000 medium-sized companies operating in Russia. This is the largest indicator compared to the same periods of previous years — from 2017 to 2024, the Ministry of Economic Development (Minek) told Izvestia on March 11. During the year, their number increased by more than 2 thousand.

"Despite the fact that medium-sized enterprises make up only 1% of the total number of legal entities, their contribution to the economy is significant. They provide employment for 12% of SME workers and account for 18% of all tax revenues in the sector. The total income of enterprises by the end of 2023 amounted to 17.34 trillion rubles," said Tatyana Ilyushnikova, Deputy Minister of Economic Development of Russia.

The largest share of such enterprises is in Moscow (24% of the total number of medium-sized enterprises), St. Petersburg (8%) and the Moscow Region (6%). There is an increase in the number of such companies in the Krasnodar Territory and the Sverdlovsk Region (3% each).

The investment is binding: every second small company refuses to invest

For the Central Bank, this should be an argument not to raise the key rate in March.

The largest share is concentrated in the areas of trade (33%), manufacturing (23%), construction (10%), agriculture (8%), transportation and storage (6%). The share of medium-sized enterprises in manufacturing is three times higher than the share of SMEs in manufacturing.

Medium–sized companies include organizations with 101 to 250 employees and profits ranging from 0.8 to 2 billion rubles per year. Subjects cross the border of SMEs if the organization's income is from 2 billion rubles per year, and the staff is 251 people or more.

Earlier, on March 7, it was reported that in 2024, small and medium-sized businesses in Russia attracted a record 1.18 trillion rubles thanks to government support through the National Guarantee System. This is 8% more than in 2023, the SME Corporation noted. Among the industries, the leaders in terms of funds raised were manufacturing (252.9 billion rubles), construction (236.7 billion rubles), scientific and technical activities (81.5 billion rubles).
