Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was detained at Manila airport on a warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC). This was announced on March 11 by the press service of the presidential administration.

It is clarified that in the morning the Philippines received an arrest warrant from the ICC for Duterte on charges of crimes against humanity. The police detained him upon arrival from Hong Kong with his wife.

"The former president and his entourage are healthy and have been examined by government doctors. <...> He is currently in custody," the press service said on the Facebook social network (owned by the recognized extremist Meta company, its activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation).

According to the local newspaper Manila Bulletin, the ICC charges against Duterte, who led the country in 2016-2022, are related to his anti-drug campaign. Measures to combat drug trafficking in the Philippines were carried out with particular brutality, during which, according to the newspaper, about 6 thousand people died.

In November, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Galant. The court ruled that the two politicians were responsible for war crimes against the civilian population. The United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Estonia expressed their willingness to comply with this court decision, while the United States and France opposed it. In February, US President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on the ICC over the court's baseless actions against the United States and Israel.
