Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida will step down on April 1 and give way to Ivan Espinosa, who currently holds the position of Director of Planning. On March 11, the manufacturer's press service announced changes in the top management.

In addition, Technical and executive Director Kunio Nakaguro and Hideyuki Sakamoto, responsible for production and supply chain, will leave their positions, and other specialists from among Nissan's top managers have already been appointed.

According to the Reuters news agency, Uchida was forced to resign because he came under pressure after the deterioration of Nissan's profit figures and the failure of merger negotiations with Honda. It is still unclear whether Espinosa's appointment will allow these negotiations to resume or open up the possibility of investments from another partner.

Mexican Ivan Espinosa has been working at Nissan since 2003. He oversaw the planning and development of the product range, as well as global strategy. Espinosa has held the current position since April 2024, having received it as part of a reorganization aimed at accelerating the company's transition to electric vehicles.

Earlier, on February 18, it was reported that Honda would agree to talks with Nissan about merging into one carmaker if the CEO of the latter, Makoto Uchida, resigns.

On February 13, it was announced that Honda and Nissan had refused to merge into one carmaker, which would have cost $60 billion. During the negotiations, the companies faced a lot of disagreements. In particular, the management of Nissan did not appreciate the idea of becoming a subsidiary of Honda.
