The non-admission of candidate Calin Georgescu to the presidential elections in Romania is a violation of all norms of democracy. This was announced on March 11 by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

"This is a violation of all the norms of democracy in the center of Europe. We have not yet heard any condemnation of this, in fact, from all European institutions," Peskov said.

According to him, Romania has taken the path of violating democratic rights. He added that any elections that take place without him would be illegitimate.

In addition, Peskov stressed that statements about Russia's alleged interference in the electoral process in Romania are "complete nonsense" and absolutely groundless accusations.

On March 9, it became known that the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Romania rejected Georgescu's candidacy for the presidential election. It was noted that the decision to exclude Georgescu from the elections was made by a majority vote — 10 members of the commission voted against, and four voted in favor.

Georgescu was taken to the prosecutor's office for questioning on February 26. He was later released on his own recognizance. At a rally in Bucharest on March 1, Georgescu said he would continue to fight for the presidency.

The first round of the Romanian presidential election was held on November 24, 2024. According to official sources, Georgescu was in the lead with 22.94% of the vote, but on November 28, the country's Constitutional Court demanded that the Central Election Commission recount the results. They were cancelled on December 6. Repeat elections will be held in Romania on May 4. The second round is scheduled for May 18.
