Over the past day, 229 road accidents have occurred on Russian roads, in which 18 people were killed and 288 injured. 14 of the dead were passengers and drivers of vehicles. This was reported to Izvestia on Tuesday, March 11, by the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Russian Interior Ministry.

As a result of 66 accidents, 35 of which occurred at pedestrian crossings and 31 outside their area of operation, four pedestrians were killed, 68 more were injured in various degrees of severity.

So, in Kazan in the morning, a 30-year-old driver of a car in a state of drug intoxication at a public transport stop ran over seven pedestrians who were getting off a bus traveling along a city route with 32 passengers in the cabin, after which he ran over another bus parked in front in the opposite direction at the edge of the roadway. As a result of the accident, six pedestrians, including a 12-year-old girl, were injured and were hospitalized, and another pedestrian was sent for outpatient treatment after receiving medical attention.

The culprit of the car accident was twice deprived of the right to drive by a court decision a few years ago for drunk driving and refusing to undergo a medical examination, but after the expiration of his sentence (18 and 20 months, respectively) in May last year, he regained his driver's license.

In addition, since August 2024, he has been brought to administrative responsibility three times for the consumption of narcotic drugs or psychotropic substances without a doctor's appointment, illegal acquisition, storage, transportation, manufacture, processing without the purpose of selling narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances or their analogues, as well as evading diagnosis, treatment and social rehabilitation from drug addiction. The passenger car in which the accident occurred was used by him as a taxi, but he did not have permission to transport passengers and luggage.

Also on Monday, 21 bus accidents were recorded on Russian roads, in which one person was killed, and 30 more road users, including three children, were injured. The reason for 14 bus accidents were traffic violations committed by drivers of other vehicles. Over the past day, 20 accidents involving minors have been registered, as a result of which 20 young road users were injured, including eight pedestrians and 11 passengers. There are no dead children.

The State Traffic Inspectorate reminded motorists that the life and health of young passengers depend entirely on the skills, driving experience, well-being and law-abiding behavior on the road of the person behind the wheel.

"Do not perform dangerous maneuvers, abandon risky driving, do not exceed the permitted speed limit, especially in conditions of limited visibility and spring weather, observe the distance and lateral interval between vehicles: leave yourself time to react adequately to a possible change in the traffic situation at any moment. We also draw the attention of drivers to the strict observance of the rules for transporting children. Take care of young passengers, preventing even the prerequisites for a possible tragedy," Police Colonel Anton Belan, deputy head of the Department for Road Safety Promotion and Prevention of child traffic injuries at the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, told Izvestia.

The day before, it was reported that Rosstandart had updated GOST with requirements for the design, color and coating of road signs. It banned reports about motels, campgrounds, hotels, and service stations. The new GOST 52290-2024 will become mandatory from 2026, but regions have the right to apply it now instead of the old standard 52229-2004.
