The Hungarian government still considers Ukraine's accession to the European Union (EU) dangerous, but it is ready to represent any position of its citizens on this issue in the international arena. This was announced on March 10 by the head of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Peter Szijjarto.

"The intention to accelerate Ukraine's accession to the EU is extremely dangerous both for the entire EU and for Hungary. Therefore, we consider it appropriate that the Hungarian people could express their opinion on this issue... Whatever the opinion of the Hungarian people, the Hungarian government will represent this position," he said at a press conference following a meeting with Romanian Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja.

At the same time, Szijjarto noted that negotiations on Kiev's membership could soon move from discussing purely technical issues to substantive discussions. It is important for Budapest to hear the opinion of its people before starting this process, the minister stressed.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced a survey of citizens of the country on Ukraine's accession to the European Union on March 7. He warned that no one can make decisions "over the head of the Hungarian people."

Earlier, on February 24, Orban announced that there were no conditions for Kiev's accession to the EU today. The prime minister added that such a decision would destroy Hungarian agriculture and the entire national economy.
