Bleeding gums is a fairly common symptom that can occur in both younger and older patients. On March 13, Victoria Kniss, a dental therapist and periodontist at SM-Dentistry, told Izvestia about what health problems he might indicate and how to act in such a situation.

According to her, among the causes of this symptom may be: poor oral hygiene, injuries to the oral mucosa; side effects from medications (for example, blood thinners); autoimmune diseases accompanied by prolonged use of drugs that weaken the immune system; nutritional deficiencies (vitamin C deficiency); hormonal changes (period pregnancy, puberty in adolescents, or in menopausal women).

"Regular brushing of teeth and the use of additional hygiene products maintain a healthy balance of bacteria. At the same time, if oral hygiene is insufficient, it can lead to an excessive proliferation of harmful bacteria. Because of this, complaints such as bad breath and bleeding gums arise," the dentist explained.

She noted that the toxins that bacteria produce as waste can cause bleeding gums. Settling on the teeth along with the remains of food, they form plaque. At first, it has a soft consistency, but if it is not removed in time, tartar will form. This can, in turn, lead to an inflammatory process called periodontitis.

"In the worst case, there is a risk of tooth loss. To prevent the occurrence of periodontal ligament inflammation, you should pay attention to bleeding gums as early as possible and consult a dentist," warned Kniss.

Injury to the oral mucosa is another possible cause of bleeding gums. According to her, it can be caused by too hard a toothbrush, as well as improper use of floss.

"There may be other reasons: eating hot food that causes burns to the oral mucosa; improperly selected dentures that cause mechanical injury to the mucous membrane. It is also worth paying attention to the seals, which must be supplied with high quality. Otherwise, if the marginal fit of the filling to the tooth is broken, inflammation and bleeding of the gums may also occur in this area," the doctor said.

Kniss stressed that teeth can bleed regularly in serious diseases such as blood clotting disorders, type II diabetes, and HIV infection.

For prevention, the dentist advised to carry out careful and high-quality oral hygiene at home, adhere to a balanced healthy diet, and also give up smoking. In addition, she recommended using dental floss, mouthwashers and mouthwashers with the right composition.

On March 6, orthodontist Andrey Zhuk told Izvestia about the connection between malocclusion and early aging. According to him, if there is a violation of the even closure of the teeth, the chin, second chin, nasolabial folds and wrinkles can appear much earlier.
