On March 10, a discussion on nuclear energy and the results of the session of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was held at the Valdai Club in Moscow.

Anton Bespalov, moderator of the meeting, Program Director of the Valdai International Discussion Club, noted that the topics of the IAEA session included the Iranian nuclear program and the situation at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). On the first issue, the organization adopted an anti-Iranian resolution with instructions to compile a report on the topic. Russia described this document as confrontational.

In turn, according to Bespalov, positive developments are visible on the issues of the NPP.

"The discussion on Ukraine was <...> as heated as ever. But the conciliatory speech of the United States attracted attention," said Mikhail Ulyanov, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to International Organizations in Vienna.

In addition, according to the diplomat, Hungary refused to join the joint statement of the EU countries. Budapest and Bratislava also refused to support the 47-country collective resolution of the IAEA against Russia, Ulyanov added.

"These are new points that indicate that the position of our opponents is becoming less monolithic," he concluded.

In addition, the panelists discussed general issues of nuclear energy development. According to Anton Khlopkov, director of the Moscow Center for Energy and Security, interest in nuclear power generation is increasing worldwide. At the same time, he noted that more than half of the countries where nuclear power units are currently being built use Russian technologies in their projects.

"If we look at projects implemented with foreign participation abroad, then almost all of them, with rare exceptions, are currently being implemented with the participation of the Russian Federation," the expert emphasized.

Earlier, on February 18, the head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, told Izvestia about plans to visit Russia again after a visit to Moscow in early February. According to him, the date of the trip has not been set, but it will take place soon.

The last visit of the head of the IAEA to Russia took place on February 7, he held talks with an interdepartmental group of civilian and military specialists led by Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev.
