- The media reported on Georgescu's plans to challenge the ban on participation in the presidential election.

Romanian opposition politician Calin Georgescu is going to challenge in court the refusal to approve his candidacy for the Romanian presidential election. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on March 10.
It is noted that the Constitutional Court must rule on Georgescu's appeal by Wednesday, March 12.
Analysts believe that it is unlikely that the highest court will allow Georgescu to participate again in the presidential elections in Romania, a member state of the European Union and NATO, which has a long border with Ukraine, the agency's material says.
If the court upholds the decision of the Central Election Commission (CEC), the three parties that hold 35% of seats in parliament and previously supported Georgescu's candidacy risk being left without a candidate in the May elections.
The day before, the CEC refused to register Georgescu as a candidate for president of Romania. It was clarified that 10 members of the commission voted against the policy, and four voted in favor. Then it was noted that the politician has the right to appeal to the Constitutional Court within 24 hours.
Prior to that, on February 26, Georgescu was taken to the prosecutor's office for questioning. He was later released on his own recognizance. At a rally in Bucharest on March 1, the politician said he would continue to fight for the presidency.
The first round of the Romanian presidential election was held on November 24, 2024. According to official sources, Georgescu was in the lead with 22.94% of the vote, but on November 28, the country's Constitutional Court demanded that the Central Election Commission recount the results. They were cancelled on December 6. Repeat elections will be held in Romania on May 4. The second round is scheduled for May 18.
