Over the past holiday weekend, 449 road accidents occurred on Russian roads, in which 52 people were killed and 56 injured. 44 of the dead were passengers and drivers of vehicles. This was reported to Izvestia on Monday, March 10, by the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.

For example, in the Volgograd region, on the federal highway R-22 Kaspiy, a passenger car driver drove into the oncoming lane, where he collided with a truck. As a result of the accident, both the culprit of the car accident and one of his passengers died. Two more passengers of the car were hospitalized with injuries.

There were 19 bus accidents in which there were no fatalities, but 20 road users were injured. Eight bus accidents were caused by traffic violations committed by their drivers.

As a result of 108 road accidents, 35 of which occurred at pedestrian crossings and 73 outside their area of operation, eight pedestrians were killed, 103 more were injured in various degrees of severity (including 17 children; four were injured at pedestrian crossings). One child, a pedestrian, was killed.

54 accidents involving minors were registered over the weekend, as a result of which 63 young road users were injured, including 39 child passengers, one cyclist and six motor transport drivers. So, in Kursk, a 16-year-old schoolboy, driving a moped, when turning left at an unregulated intersection did not provide an advantage in traffic and collided with a car moving in the opposite direction. The teenager was injured and ended up in the hospital.

The State Traffic Inspectorate called on parents to ensure the safety of their children with the onset of the spring period, especially on weekends, when they spend a lot of free time outdoors and more often get into car accidents. To improve the visibility of young pedestrians, drivers of vehicles should use retroreflective elements on children's outerwear at night.

"We urge parents to strictly monitor and prevent students from trying to get behind the wheel on their own, as well as to exclude the possibility for them to access the keys of cars, mopeds and motorcycles, prohibiting the management of cars and motor vehicles without the appropriate right and driving skills.
Remember that the lack of control over the behavior and leisure of children, especially in the evening, often leads to injuries or even death of young road users," Police Colonel Anton Belan, deputy head of the Department for road Safety Promotion and prevention of child traffic injuries at the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Russian Interior Ministry, told Izvestia.

The department also recalled the administrative responsibility for providing the opportunity to drive motor vehicles to children who do not have a driver's license of the appropriate category.

Earlier that day, it was reported that Rosstandart had updated GOST with requirements for the design, color and coating of road signs. It banned reports about motels, campgrounds, hotels, and service stations. The new GOST 52290-2024 will become mandatory from 2026, but regions have the right to apply it now instead of the old standard 52229-2004.
