Rosstandart has introduced a ban on advertising hotels and motels on road signs

Rosstandart has updated GOST with requirements for the design, color and coating of road signs. It banned reports about motels, campgrounds, hotels, and service stations. This was reported by Kommersant on March 10.

The ban on advertising hotels, motels, campgrounds, and car service stations has been applied to signs 6.9.1, 6.9.2, and 6.10.1 (information boards on a green, white, and blue background indicating directions to cities, towns, and large facilities). The new GOST 52290-2024 will become mandatory from 2026, but regions have the right to apply it now instead of the old standard 52229-2004.

The reason for the ban is unknown, and there has been no explanation from the developers (the Moscow Data Center and the Russian Institute of Standardization). The permission to indicate on the signs the direction of travel to museums, monuments, swimming pools and racetracks has been preserved, the note says.

Sergey Romashkin, Vice President of the ATOR Association of Tour Operators, called the innovation untimely, since for the development of automobile tourism it is necessary to simplify the road to such facilities as hotels. GOST was changed due to the fact that the signs used to actually advertise a private business, he suggested. Pyotr Shkumatov, coordinator of the Blue Buckets movement, noted that there is a practice in the regions when businessmen "negotiate" with local road workers to put a sign "motel" or "camping" on the sign.

On February 25, it was reported that Rosstandart published a package of amendments to GOST-R 52289, which establishes mandatory rules for the use of road signs and markings. The changes will take effect on January 1, 2026, but regional authorities can apply it now. Several new characters have been added to the document, for example, "Deaf".
