Russian forward Alexander Ovechkin, captain of the Washington Capitals, scored 1,600 points in the National Hockey League (NHL) regular season and reduced the gap from Canadian Wayne Gretzky's record for NHL goals to eight goals.

He scored his 886th goal into an empty net in a match against the Seattle Kraken on March 9 and repeated Gretzky's record for the most goals scored in one calendar month (157 goals).

In addition, the 39-year-old Russian forward became the 11th hockey player in history to reach 1,600 points.

Ovechkin still ranks second on the list of the best snipers in NHL history with 886 goals in 1,474 games. Gretzky leads the way with 894 goals in 1,487 matches, writes Sport-Express.

Earlier, on March 8, the Washington Capitals beat the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL regular season game with a score of 5:2. Ovechkin made one shot on goal during the game, but did not score any points per game. He has nine goals left to reach the record of Canadian hockey player Wayne Gretzky.
