- Georgescu's supporters broke down the railings at the building of the Central Election Commission of Romania

People supporting the opposition politician Calin Georgescu broke down the fences installed by gendarmes at the building of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Romania. This was reported on March 9 by Digi24 TV channel.
Many supporters of the politician gathered at the scene of the incident. At the same time, the police promptly returned the broken fences to their place.
The head of the US Department of Public Efficiency (DOGE), billionaire and entrepreneur Elon Musk on his page on the social network X (ex.Twitter) condemned the decision of the Central Election Commission of Romania to refuse to approve Georgescu's candidacy for the presidential election.
"This is crazy," Musk wrote.
Georgescu himself wrote in X, commenting on the decision of the Central Election Commission, that now a dictatorship has been established in Europe, and Romania is under tyranny.
"A direct blow to the heart of democracy all over the world!" the politician said.
Earlier that day, the CEC refused to register Georgescu as a candidate for president of Romania. It was clarified that 10 members of the commission voted against the policy, and four voted in favor. Georgescu has 24 hours to file an appeal to the Constitutional Court of Romania, which, in turn, must make a decision on it within 48 hours.
Prior to that, on February 26, Georgescu was taken to the prosecutor's office for questioning. He was later released on his own recognizance. At a rally in Bucharest on March 1, the politician said he would continue to fight for the presidency.
The first round of the Romanian presidential election was held on November 24, 2024. According to official sources, Georgescu was in the lead with 22.94% of the vote, but on November 28, the country's Constitutional Court demanded that the Central Election Commission recount the results. They were cancelled on December 6. Repeat elections will be held in Romania on May 4. The second round is scheduled for May 18.
