- Romania's Central Election Commission rejects Georgescu's candidacy for the presidential election

Romania's Central Election Commission (CEC) has rejected the candidacy of opposition politician Calin Georgescu for the presidential election. This was announced on March 9 by the Digi24 portal.
According to him, the decision to exclude Georgescu from the elections was made by a majority vote — 10 members of the commission voted against, and four voted in favor.
It is noted that the politician has the right to appeal to the Constitutional Court within 24 hours. The court, in turn, must make a decision within 48 hours. The final verdict on Georgescu's candidacy is expected no later than March 12.
Georgescu was taken to the prosecutor's office for questioning on February 26. He was later released on his own recognizance. At a rally in Bucharest on March 1, Georgescu said he would continue to fight for the presidency.
The first round of the Romanian presidential election was held on November 24, 2024. According to official sources, Georgescu was in the lead with 22.94% of the vote, but on November 28, the country's Constitutional Court demanded that the Central Election Commission recount the results. They were cancelled on December 6. Repeat elections will be held in Romania on May 4. The second round is scheduled for May 18.
