The statement of the 26 European Union (EU) countries on Ukraine has no legal force. This was announced on March 9 by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.

"This political declaration in support of Ukraine does not matter from a legal point of view," he said on the Kossuth radio station. His words are quoted by Hirado.

Szijjarto stressed that this statement reflects the opinion of 26 states, but Hungary did not succumb to this pressure, as it does not want the conflict in Ukraine to continue. According to him, it is time for Europe to "stop its policy of supporting the continuation of the conflict."

On March 6, the EU postponed the adoption of a statement on support for Ukraine until the next summit, which will be held in mid-March, due to Hungary's position. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that he refused to support the statement on assistance to Kiev.

The head of European diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, in turn, said on the same day that the EU was experiencing more and more difficulties due to the fact that Hungary was blocking the association's decisions to provide assistance to Ukraine. At the same time, she stressed that the European Union is still striving to achieve unity among the 27 member states of the association.
