Von der Leyen announced a plan to hold regular EC security meetings

The European Commission (EC) will hold meetings on European Union (EU) security issues on a regular basis. EC President Ursula von der Leyen announced this on March 9 at a press conference in Brussels.
"In the coming weeks, I will convene the first meeting of the Board of European Security Commissioners. This will keep the members of the EC Board informed of the latest security developments," von der Leyen said, her speech was broadcast on the EC website.
She pointed out that such events would discuss both the internal and external security of the EU, as well as issues of defense, trade, foreign interference and protection in cyberspace. The head of the EC pointed out that these meetings are necessary for the "collective security" of the association.
In addition, von der Leyen said that the 800 billion euro defense package, which she proposed to allocate, would allow building a defense union based on the EU. The head of the EC stressed that all countries of the association should equally invest in its defense.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on March 8 that the alliance's countries will have to invest more in security and increase the production of weapons, ships, aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles and space systems.
Von der Leyen spoke about the 800 billion euro militarization plan for Europe on March 6, it was agreed upon by the leaders of the EU countries. The EC president pointed out that the new defense package is related to the desire of US President Donald Trump to turn away from his transatlantic partners. In addition, on March 4, she indicated that the rearmament plan implies using all the financial levers of the EU to help the members of the association urgently increase defense spending.
