US President Donald Trump's rejection of allied relations with Europe destroys the idea of a collective West opposed to Russia. This was reported on March 8 by the American newspaper The New York Times.

"President Trump presented Moscow with a gift. <...> Now we will have [separate from the United States] Europe, Russia, China and the United States. The idea of a [collective] West has become empty," the article says.

It is noted that this state of affairs causes a real shock among Europeans. Now, without American military power, their countries will face a huge task of rearmament.

"Europe is being left to fend for itself," the NYT noted.

The day before, the Swedish newspaper Expressen reported that the United States intends to stop participating in the planning of military exercises in Europe. Sweden and other NATO member countries will have to plan such events without the American side or with the participation of a small number of US units, the publication clarified.

Former American intelligence officer Scott Ritter told Izvestia on March 7 that the European Union (EU) is not capable of anything without the help of the United States. In particular, he noted that the countries of the association will not be able to allocate enough funds to participate in the North Atlantic Alliance, as required by Trump.

NBC News reported on March 6 that Trump is considering changing the format of U.S. participation in NATO. As part of this plan, the United States can waive the mandatory protection of allies in the event of an attack on them if the country does not reach the threshold for defense spending. It was noted that this would mean a significant departure from the basic principle of the alliance.
