The United States intends to stop participating in the planning of military exercises in Europe. This was reported on March 7 by the Swedish newspaper Expressen, citing sources.

According to the newspaper, this will have an impact on a number of exercises in Sweden.

"We are talking about exercises that are currently on the drawing board, that is, a little further away," an unnamed source told the newspaper.

It clarifies that the United States plays an important role in the overall conduct of exercises in Europe, which indicates their importance in the defense of the continent.

If this statement is implemented, Sweden and other NATO member countries will need to plan exercises without the American side or with the participation of a small number of US units.

NBC News reported on March 6 that US President Donald Trump is considering changing the format of US participation in NATO. It was noted that this would mean a significant departure from the basic principle of the alliance. Later, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that Washington would not withdraw from the military bloc.

In January, Trump stated that he was not sure whether it was worth continuing to sponsor NATO, since the United States protects the members of the bloc, but does not receive assistance in return. He noted that he would seek to ensure that the states of the North Atlantic Alliance increased defense spending to 5% of GDP.
