Provocative statements by American President Donald Trump addressed to Europe are aimed at forcing US allies to act in accordance with Washington's wishes. Konstantin Sukhoverkhov, program manager of the Russian International Affairs Council, told Izvestia about this.

"The Europeans do not like that they are publicly belittled and that interaction with the United States takes place not through diplomatic or military channels, but through public criticism from Trump. This is not about a NATO crisis, as the organization will not cease to exist, but rather about a showdown within the transatlantic family," he said.

On March 6, Trump expressed doubt that European allies would defend the United States within the framework of the responsibilities imposed on them by membership in NATO.

"At the moment, we see a crisis among Europeans who do not know how to show and emphasize their independence as an international actor," the expert added.

Meanwhile, the political scientist did not rule out that the next president may have different approaches to NATO.
