Strategic differences between Europe and the United States significantly complicate the possibility of applying Article 5 on the collective defense of the North Atlantic Alliance. This was stated to Izvestia by Dmitry Danilov, Head of the European Security Department at the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor at MGIMO.

"It would be strange to say that a clear crisis in Europe's relations with the United States would somehow magically not affect the main transatlantic organization. Now we are witnessing a NATO crisis," he said.

The expert recalled that during his first term, American President Donald Trump took many steps to legally provide a clearer picture of the possibilities and parameters of the implementation of Article 5 on collective defense.

"New operational areas have been included, including cyberspace and outer space. A classification of hybrid threats has also been undertaken, but the changing political landscape within transatlantic relations indicates that the work done is clearly insufficient," Danilov added.

On March 6, Trump said that the United States would not defend NATO countries that spend insufficient money on their defense within the alliance.
