The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) may lose their combat capability due to the suspension of military assistance from the United States. This opinion was shared with Izvestia on March 7 by a former special forces officer, retired Colonel Anatoly Matviychuk.

Earlier in the day, The Washington Post published an article by columnist David Ignatius, who noted that despite the outrage of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky due to pressure from American leader Donald Trump, he needs a cease-fire, as the Ukrainian Armed Forces are exhausted and may begin to lose ground in the next six months. In addition, the head of the White House himself said that "Russia is destroying Ukraine on the battlefield."

Commenting on this, Matviychuk stressed that neither the military-industrial complex of Ukraine, nor the Ukrainian troops themselves today represent a single military force without the West. The United States provided most of the assistance, he added. In particular, the expert explained, Washington's support consisted of the supply of ammunition, reconnaissance equipment, including space, and target designation.

"If the restrictions are extended, in the next 2-3 months the Armed Forces of Ukraine will lose their full combat capability for active operations, they will be forced to switch to positional defense, and positional defense implies, of course, the loss of positions and the surrender of those areas they occupy today," the source concluded.

However, he added, Trump may also return aid to Ukraine, it depends on what Zelensky offers him in return. In particular, Kiev can guarantee the return of the funds invested by Washington in the Ukrainian issue.

The day before, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, responding to a question from Izvestia, said that the suspension of military aid to Ukraine from the United States could help quickly stop the Ukrainian conflict. He also noted that the Russian Federation is ready for an honest conversation on the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict. According to him, it is important for Moscow to ensure its own security.
