In Romania, the authorities do not intend to allow independent presidential candidate Calin Georgescu to run in the presidential elections in May. This was reported on March 7 by the Financial Times (FT), citing sources.

"Georgescu's candidacy is likely to be rejected due to the criminal charges against him, including incitement to actions against the constitutional order," the article says.

According to the newspaper, the reason for these measures was the investigation into the case of illegal financing of the election campaign, as well as computer fraud and propaganda of certain ideologies.

At the same time, Digi 24 TV channel informed that Georgescu had submitted documents to the Central Election Bureau (CEC) for registration as a candidate for president of Romania.

Georgescu was taken to the prosecutor's office for questioning on February 26. He was later released on his own recognizance. At a rally in Bucharest on March 1, Georgescu said he would continue to fight for the presidency.

The first round of the Romanian presidential election was held on November 24, 2024. According to official sources, Georgescu was in the lead with 22.94% of the vote, but on November 28, the country's Constitutional Court demanded that the Central Election Commission recount the results. They were cancelled on December 6. Repeat elections will be held in Romania on May 4. The second round is scheduled for May 18.
