Polish President Andrzej Duda has proposed an amendment to the constitution making it mandatory to allocate at least 4% of the country's GDP to defense. He announced this on March 7 during his visit to the Sejm.

"Our security must be constantly strengthened. There is a consensus on this issue on the political scene today, and I believe that it should be consolidated at the legislative level. Therefore, I have prepared and submitted to parliament an amendment to the constitution, which sets a minimum level of defense spending at 4% of GDP annually," Polish Radio quoted him as saying.

In addition, on his page in X (ex. Twitter) Duda called this proposal the best test of the intentions of the political forces in the country.

"The best test of the intentions of all political forces is my draft amendments to the constitution, which guarantees a minimum defense spending of 4 percent of GDP. I urge you to accept this project immediately," the post says.

The Financial Times newspaper reported on December 20, 2024, that US President Donald Trump would require NATO member states to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP. Later, on January 12, Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysh said that the members of the alliance would be able to fulfill this requirement of Trump only in 10 years.
