Import of new cars to Russia fell by 73%
In February 2025, the import of new passenger cars to Russia was 73% lower than in February last year, and amounted to 16.2 thousand units. At the same time, 31.9 thousand new passenger cars were imported into the country in January, the analytical agency Autostat reported on March 7. According to him, Changan brand cars are most often imported to Russia, Changan UNI-S is the leader among the models.
According to analysts, imports of new passenger cars have been falling year-on-year for the fourth month in a row (since November 2024). February import volumes turned out to be so low that over the past few years they exceed only the monthly figures of March–September 2022 (from 6.5 thousand to 15.7 thousand units).
As Sergey Udalov, the agency's executive director, explained, importers bring fewer cars to the country because they record large volumes of cars in warehouses. Thus, newly imported cars will not "put pressure" on the drains.
Imports of used cars decreased by 20% year-on-year (to 18.5 thousand units). Compared to January, volumes decreased by 5%. Toyota became the leader among the brands, and Honda Freed became the leader among the models.
Experts noted that new passenger cars in the last winter month were most often imported from China (80.9%), followed by Kyrgyzstan (6.6%) and Belarus (5.2%). Used cars were mainly imported from Japan (53.4%), South Korea (20%) and China (9.6%).
Earlier in the day, it was reported that in February, the share of Chinese cars in the Russian market was 53%. This is one percentage point (percentage points) lower than in January 2025 and 6 percentage points more modest than a year ago.
Yesterday it became known that 78,040 new passenger cars were sold in Russia over the last winter month, which is 24.9% less than in February 2024. Lada remains the most popular brand, with its share rising to 31%.
