- The chemist spoke about the possible negative impact on the health of stationery markers

Headaches, nausea, and other symptoms of poisoning may be associated with the use of substandard stationery markers. Andrey Dorokhov, Associate Professor of the Department of Inorganic Chemistry named after A.N. Reformatsky RTU MIREA, warned about this on Friday, March 7.
"Low-quality markers may contain harmful chemicals such as toluene, xylene and benzene in the ink. These compounds belong to the class of aromatic hydrocarbons and are known for their toxicity. They can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea and other symptoms of poisoning," the chemist explained in an interview with Lenta.Ru .
According to the expert, prolonged exposure to these substances can damage the nervous system, liver and kidneys. Volatile organic compounds can also accumulate in indoor air and cause respiratory irritation, allergic reactions and worsen general well-being, he added.
He stressed that when buying markers, it is worth paying attention to the absence of a pungent odor: high-quality products should not have a strong chemical odor, as this indicates the presence of harmful solvents. Dorokhov also recommended checking for safety certificates to ensure that the products have passed the necessary tests and comply with established standards.
Earlier, on January 27, Natalia Tkachenko, a cosmetology chemist and founder of the beauty brand Roz Mary, told Izvestia that there are several trends in the beauty industry in 2025, including environmental friendliness and transparency of cosmetics formulations. According to her, consumers have become more and more interested in the composition of funds, according to 360.ru .
