The share of Chinese brands decreased in the Russian car market

In February, the share of Chinese cars in the Russian market was 53%. This is 1 percentage point (percentage points) lower than in January 2025 and 6 percentage points more modest than a year ago, according to data from Gazprombank Autoleasing, which was reviewed by Izvestia on March 7.
All brands from China accounted for only about 40,000 transactions in the last month of winter, 18% less than a month earlier and 35% less than in February 2024, when 61,375 Chinese-made cars were sold.
Haval brand crossovers were purchased by 9.6 thousand customers. Compared to February 2024, the indicator was 22% lower. The Haval Jolion brand's bestseller began to sell a quarter worse than a year ago (3.8 thousand cars).
"It affects the fact that more than 70% of the brand's crossovers were sold on credit last year. Currently, less than half of the brand's cars are being purchased with borrowed money," the experts explained.
Chery (8.4 thousand machines, -17%) and Changan (4.4 thousand, -26%) have the same problems. Nevertheless, the first brand has two crossovers remaining in the top ten in the overall model standings. The Tiggo 7 Pro Max was chosen by 3.7 thousand customers (-17%), while the Tiggo 4 Pro was chosen by 2.1 thousand (-24%). Changan's CS55 Plus crossover, also known as the UNI-S, remained in the lead (2.1 thousand cars, -2%).
Omoda dealers (2 thousand transactions, -36%) and Tank (1.4 thousand, -31%) felt the situation with the lack of buyers more acutely. In turn, Geely and Exeed among the leading Chinese brands showed the worst dynamics in February. Each experienced a more than twofold decline of 59%, according to the leasing company.
It is noted that each brand has its own reasons for the negative trend.
"Geely (5.1 thousand transactions) still has the Monjaro crossover as an important pillar of sales (1.9 thousand cars, -60%). But in two years on our market, it has already ceased to look as attractive an acquisition as it was before. In addition, the brand has "dispersed" its efforts into two sub—brands - Belgee and Knewstar. And Exeed (1,400 vehicles) has been finding it increasingly difficult to apply for premium status over the past year. In order to maintain market share, the company periodically gave very significant discounts, often more than a million rubles, which inevitably affected the perception of the brand's status. As soon as discount programs shrink, it becomes difficult for sellers to close deals," the experts said.
At the same time, in February, Jetour (1.8 thousand, + 21%), Jaecoo (1.7 thousand, +44%) and GAC (1.1 thousand, + 10%) brands grew against the background of the low base of last year.
Earlier, on February 27, Sergey Tselikov, director of the Autostat analytical agency, said that Russia had recorded a historical record for sales of new pickups in a year. By the end of last year, 29.2 thousand such vehicles were sold in the country, with an annual increase of 65%.
