US President Donald Trump has questioned the readiness of the NATO countries to come to the aid of the United States in case of "problems". He stated this to American journalists at the White House on March 6.

"The biggest problem with NATO is, I know the guys, they are my friends, but if the United States has problems and we turn to them, do you think they will come to protect us? I don't think so," the American leader said.

He also pointed out the unfairness in the distribution of funding for the alliance's activities. According to Trump, until now, the United States has almost completely provided for the costs of the bloc at its own expense.

"I see NATO as potentially good, but you need to think hard, very unfair things are happening. Until I came, we were paying almost 100% for defense, they are deceiving us in trade," he complained.

Earlier in the day, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that the United States would not withdraw from the military bloc. He then added that the United States had "clearly confirmed its commitment to NATO." On February 27, Rutte announced his readiness to provide billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine after a conversation with US President Donald Trump. However, he did not specify which countries are involved in this process and what guarantees will be provided to Kiev.
