The AFD called for changing the constitution of Germany for the sake of its own nuclear weapons

Rudiger Lukassen, a member of the Bundestag's defense committee, from the German right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, stated the need for the country to have its own nuclear weapons, as well as to introduce mandatory conscription of citizens, including women, for military service. He announced this on March 6 in an interview with journalists of the t-online news portal.

"Germany needs its own nuclear weapons and compulsory military service, including for women. To achieve this, it is necessary to change the Basic Law as soon as possible," the politician said.

In his opinion, in the absence of a "nuclear umbrella" from the United States, European countries will have to act independently. Lukassen also said that Germany needs to be turned into a country "with its own military and command structure" that will be able to provide nuclear deterrence within the framework of European autonomy.

"Germany needs its own nuclear umbrella. <... However, we must not forget: Russia is not our friend, but it is not our enemy either," said Hannes Gnauk, another German official and a member of the Bundestag from AFD.

He also called for the country's strategic partnership with Russia.
