NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on March 6 that he was cautiously optimistic about the negotiations between the United States and Ukraine after the disastrous visit of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to the White House.

"I welcome the fact that the United States and Ukraine are currently discussing the way forward and how to resolve the difficulties. <...> I am cautiously optimistic that this will lead to good results," he said during a press conference after meeting with Polish President Andrzej Duda.

The NATO Secretary General also stressed the need for continued support for the Kiev regime so that Ukraine could achieve a strong position in peace negotiations.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that representatives of the administration of US President Donald Trump had allowed the suspension of aid to Ukraine to be short-term if Zelensky yielded to the demands of the White House. According to American officials, the suspension of aid is being carried out in order to put pressure on the Ukrainian leader to sign an agreement to provide American companies with access to Ukrainian minerals.

During a meeting in the Oval Office on February 28, a verbal altercation took place between Trump and Zelensky. The American president accused the head of the Kiev regime of disrespecting the United States. According to him, the president of Ukraine is "playing with the Third World War", as well as the lives of millions of people. It later became known that after the altercation, Zelensky left the White House earlier than scheduled.

Later, in a speech to the US Congress on March 5, Trump announced that he had received an important letter from Zelensky, in which he expressed Ukraine's desire "to sit down at the negotiating table as soon as possible in order to achieve long-term peace." In addition, the American leader announced Zelensky's readiness to sign an agreement on rare earth resources.
