The Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, MEP Thierry Mariani told Izvestia on March 6.

"This article states that the European Commission, with the support of the Council of Europe, that is, the heads of State and Government, but without consulting the European Parliament or national parliaments, may take exceptional measures. EC President Ursula von der Leyen has announced that she intends to raise 800 billion euros for the rearmament of Europe. And she wants to do this without consulting the European Parliament or national parliaments. In other words, this is an attempt to usurp power in the EU, because there is no justification for non—compliance with procedures," the politician stressed.

The politician explained that the use of article 122 can be justified if absolutely necessary. This is how it was used to purchase medical masks during the coronavirus epidemic.

"Right now, this is completely out of place, because we are on the verge of peace, not invasion, as they are trying to convince us," he added.

According to him, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban will not be able to prevent the EC from using Article 122.

"A qualified majority is enough, so Orban alone will not be able to do anything," Mariani said.
