Slovakia will block the conclusions of the European Council following the summit of the European Union (EU) in the absence of a plan to find ways to restore gas transit through Ukraine. This was announced on March 6 by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico at a meeting of the Committee on European Affairs before his trip to Brussels.

"If there is no mention of restoring gas transit [through Ukraine] or the need to restore it, I will block the conclusions," the prime minister said.

He clarified that work is currently underway on the wording of the mention of this issue. Fico expressed the opinion that eventually Slovakia's demand will be taken into account. According to him, "it is impossible for everything to go to Ukraine," which does not give permission for gas transit to Europe through its territory.

"I think a reference in the style of "Let's talk about restoring gas transit through Ukraine again" is tolerable," he added.

Janos Molnar-Gago, leader of the Hungarian National Accord movement, called on Hungary and Slovakia on March 6. href="https://iz.ru/1849612/2025-03-06/vengerskii-politik-prizval-fico-i-orbana-nalozit-veto-na-pomos-ukraine " target="_blank">veto assistance to Ukraine in connection with threats to Europe's energy security. He also asked why countries should support Kiev, which attacked the Turkish Stream pipeline, through which they receive the necessary gas.

CTK agency reported on March 3 that Fico had threatened the European Union (EU) block the summit on Ukraine due to Kiev's refusal to resume natural gas transit. It was clarified that he intends to do this on condition that government officials do not support Bratislava's demand for the resumption of natural gas transit through its territory.
