Canada on Wednesday, March 5, filed a lawsuit with the dispute settlement body of the World Trade Organization (WTO) over customs duties USA.

"Canada requested as part of the settlement disputes at the WTO should begin consultations with [the United States] on new tariff measures imposed by the United States on goods originating from Canada. The application was sent to WTO members on March 5," the WTO statement.

Canada argues that the additional ad valorem duties announced by the United States do not comply with various provisions of the 1994 General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), as well as the WTO Agreement on Trade Facilitation.

The President USA Donald Trump threatened Canada on March 4 an increase in the amount of duties in the event of retaliatory measures to tariffs from the United States. On the same day, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau He called the imposition of duties by Washington the beginning of a trade war against Ottawa. He also announced the introduction by Canada of duties of 25% on imports from the United States worth $125 billion in 21 days.
