The defense plan presented by the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen is an attempt to please the president USA Donald Trump, who is demanding an increase in military spending from European partners. In this way, European officials want to strengthen their power, Alexei Zudin, a political scientist and senior lecturer at the MGIMO University of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, said in an interview with Izvestia on March 5.

Von der leyen announced the beginning of the "era of rearmament" in Europe on March 4. She spoke about the plan, which consists of five key points. The first involves unblocking government defense funding at the country level. The second one includes a proposal to provide the EU member states with loans in the amount of €150 billion for investments in defense.

"This plan meets the interests of the globalist elites who are currently in power in most European countries, which are facing new American leadership, with Donald Trump's desire to achieve a redistribution of defense spending between the United States and Europe. <..."Von der Leyen is making forced steps to meet the demands of Donald Trump. Such projects are aimed at ensuring the preservation of the power of these elites," commented Zudin.

He also stressed that the Europeans would not be satisfied with the increase in defense spending, as funds would be withdrawn from social spheres.

Also on March 5, the Euractiv portal published the opinion that von der Leyen's plan for EU rearmament is far from reality. It was noted that the head of the EC "shifted the burden of finding real funds to the shoulders of the member states." Euractiv drew attention to the fact that the European Commission also provides few details on how it intends to reach the figure of €800 billion "through less controversial proposed options."
