The political scientist allowed Hungary to be bribed by the EU to support Ukraine

The European Union (EU) may indeed deprive Hungary of the right to vote in the association against the background of its policy on Ukraine. However, before that, Brussels will try to negotiate with Budapest by pressing on the issue of financing Hungary by the EU. Political scientist Yuri Svetov shared this opinion with Izvestia on March 5.

Earlier in the day, the newspaper Politico reported that the deputies of the European Parliament (EP) from the Volt party href="https://iz.ru/1849225/2025-03-05/politico-uznala-o-predlozhenii-deputatov-ep-lishit-prava-golosa-vengrii-v-es " target="_blank">they will propose to deprive Hungary of the right to vote in the EU. According to media reports, on March 6, deputies will send the relevant document to the heads of the countries of the association.

"These ideas have been around for a long time. It was regularly discussed that in the European Union, as well as in NATO, this principle of unanimity is very hindered. Because the point of these two structures is that a team from Washington or Brussels came and saluted everyone, and they went to do it," Svetov commented.

So, Brussels has already found ways to circumvent the restrictions imposed by Budapest. For example, Hungary refused to agree on an aid fund for Ukraine, then the EU decided that only those who plan to invest would be able to vote.

"I think the EU will use the method of bribery. He will concede to Hungary in something unprincipled: "This is on you, just vote in solidarity with everyone." It should be understood that Hungary, like Slovakia, is an economically weak state, Hungary has no access to the sea, they are vulnerable and depend on Brussels. Also, against the background of a weak economy, the Baltic countries are dependent on Brussels' policies, he added.

Brussels and London will not be able to completely replace Washington in this field — Zelensky has already backed down.
