Glaucoma is a chronic pathology characterized by increased intraocular pressure, the development of optical neuropathy and visual impairment. On March 6, Zarina Kurachinova, chief physician of the federal network of eye clinics World Vision Clinic, told Izvestia about the danger of the disease.

"The main danger of glaucoma is that a person does not feel pain or a sharp deterioration in vision in the early stages. But when the first symptoms appear, the damage to the optic nerve is already irreversible," she said.

According to the doctor, the information that glaucoma is a problem for people over the age of 60 is a myth. She noted that the disease is increasingly being diagnosed in young people, and sometimes even in adolescents. Kurachinova named genetics, high intraocular pressure, vascular problems and stress as its main causes.

"Modern people overload their eyes: computer work, gadgets, chronic stress. All this affects intraocular pressure and can trigger the development of glaucoma," the specialist said.

She stressed that it is almost impossible to independently determine the presence of the disease in the early stages. However, if you have iridescent circles in front of your eyes, periodic blurring of the image, a sharp deterioration in vision in the dark and headaches, you should consult an ophthalmologist, Kurachinova noted.

According to the doctor, glaucoma is incurable, but it can be controlled. The main thing is to identify the disease in a timely manner and begin treatment. Depending on the stage, the doctor may prescribe drug therapy. In some cases, laser or surgical intervention is necessary, she said.

"Once a year, you need to undergo a full examination by an ophthalmologist — to measure intraocular pressure, check the field of vision and the condition of the optic nerve. Especially if you are over 40 years old or there have been cases of glaucoma in your family," Kurachinova concluded.

On February 28, Maria Churganova, ophthalmologist at the Sberbank Health medical company, told Izvestia about contraindications to wearing lenses. According to her, this is not recommended for inflammation or damage to the surface of the eyes, the presence of any formations or allergies on their surface. Also, lenses should not be used during colds, pregnancy, or mental disorders, she added.
