The European Commission (EC) has proposed extending the current regulation on gas storage in the European Union (EU) until the end of 2027 in order to ensure the continued security of energy supply and stability of the European gas market in the current geopolitical context. This was announced on March 5 in a statement published on the official site In the statement.

"The gas storage facility has protected EU citizens from the risk of supply disruptions, and therefore it is imperative that we continue to use this tool," said Dan Jorgensen, Commissioner for Energy and Housing.

However, he stressed that Member States needed sufficient flexibility to fill storage facilities throughout the summer under the best conditions.

The Gas Storage Regulation was adopted in June 2022 to ensure sufficient gas supplies for EU homes and businesses during the winter. Since then, the EU has consistently exceeded the target for filling storage facilities by 90% before the start of the heating season. The significant gas storage capacity of the European Union provides 30% of winter supplies to the EU.

The Commission also recommended that EU countries show flexibility when deciding on measures to replenish storage facilities this summer in order to avoid distorting the domestic energy market.

In August 2024, the president Of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky said that Ukraine will not renew the gas transit agreement with Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin Putin pointed out that Moscow does not refuse gas supplies through Ukraine. From January 1, 2025 Gazprom has stopped supplying fuel to Europe through the Ukrainian gas transportation system.
