The UN General Assembly approved Russia's resolution on the 80th anniversary of the Victory

The General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) has adopted a resolution on the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, which suggests holding a solemn meeting in memory of the victims from 2025 and thereafter every five years. The video of the meeting is published on the website of the UN body.

The project was prepared by Russia, and dozens of other countries also participated in it, including Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Serbia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, North Korea and Iran.

The relevant document was adopted by consensus.

The resolution also implies an annual solemn celebration on May 8th and 9th by all Member States, UN system organizations, non-governmental organizations and individuals. These dates should be celebrated as a tribute to all the victims of the Second World War.


Earlier, on December 20, 2024, the President of Russia Vladimir Putin has announced the year 2025, The Year of Defender of the Fatherland. According to the head of state, this decision was made in honor of the participants of the special military operation and in memory of the exploits of all the ancestors.
