In the first reading, the Georgian Parliament adopted a bill on foreign agents, similar to the American FARA (Foreign Agents Registration Act). The plenary session, which took place on March 4, was broadcast on on the website of the country's parliament.
"84 deputies voted for the adoption [of the law]," the message on the Sputnik Georgia Telegram channel clarifies.
An analogue of the law adopted in USA in 1938, provides for the status of a foreign agent not only for non-profit legal entities with foreign financing, but also for individuals. Failure to comply may result in criminal liability.
On February 7, Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili said that all those who fought against the law "On Transparency of foreign influence" (the law on foreign agents), adopted in the republic, href="https://iz.ru/1835845/2025-02-08/v-tbilisi-potrebovali-izvinenii-za-kritiku-zakona-ob-inoagentakh-posle-slov-o-usaid">We must apologize to her government and people.
