Austria's attitude towards Russia is unlikely to change under the new government. Political scientist Egor Belyachkov shared this opinion with Izvestia on March 4.

He noted that this is due to the fact that the Austrian Ministry of European and Foreign Affairs will be headed by the leader of the liberal party New Austria and the Liberal Forum (NEOS). According to the source, the new government will be committed to strengthening communication with Brussels in foreign policy, which the NEOS liberals actively advocated during the election campaign.

However, it is worth noting that the coalition of the ruling parties — the "candy coalition" — may not last the entire official legislative period, due to differences in views on Austria's domestic policy. The expert added that much will depend on the internal consolidation of the coalition partners. Despite the fact that a coalition of the Austrian People's Party (ANP), the Social Democrats and NEOS was formed, their first attempt to reach an agreement at the end of 2024 ended in complete failure.

"Thus, the three—party Austrian coalition remains very amorphous and it is somewhat premature to draw conclusions about the long-term nature of its policy in any of the areas," the political scientist concluded.

Earlier, on January 4, Austrian Chancellor and head of the ANP Karl Nehammer announced that he will leave his posts after the failure of negotiations on the creation of a ruling coalition following the parliamentary elections in September.

Then, on March 3, it became known that Austrian President Alexander van der Bellen sworn in the new ANP leader Christian Stoker as chancellor.
