The Soviet army liberated Zvolen in Slovakia

On March 14, the Red Army liberated Zvolen, an important railway junction in Slovakia. This is reported by the newspaper Izvestia.
The troops of the 2nd Ukrainian Front, fighting the enemy in the difficult conditions of the mountainous and wooded area of the Carpathians, won. This area was an important defensive point for the German troops on the Gron River.
In addition, Soviet troops occupied the settlements of Leskovets, Muoteva, Dobra Niva, Banska Bela, Tepla, Repish, Povazhan.
"The troops of the 2nd Ukrainian Front, operating in the Carpathian Mountains, are fighting their way forward. Today, our troops captured the city of Zvolen. The enemy has built solid defenses on the far and near approaches to the city. On the slopes of the mountains, the Germans equipped artillery positions and machine-gun nests, from where they shot through the approaches to the city. Wide anti-tank trenches blocked all roads. The enemy has concentrated large infantry forces and a lot of self-propelled artillery in this area. After a stubborn battle, the Soviet units broke the enemy resistance and, having captured the village of Muoteva, broke through to the Zvolen railway station," the newspaper reported on March 14, 1945.
There were exactly 56 days left until the Great Victory.
According to Izvestia, the fighting has moved to the streets of the city. The German troops, trying to improve their situation, tried to organize a counterattack, but the Soviet soldiers managed to oust the enemy across the Gron River.
"There are many enemy corpses left on the outskirts of the city and its streets. Captured trophies and prisoners. Zvolen is a junction of four railways and several highways. The city has industrial enterprises for processing iron ore, of which the area is rich in deposits," the publication notes.
The material was published as part of the Izvestia special project "80 days to Victory."
