The Council of People's Commissars of the Latvian SSR has approved plans for the reconstruction of the cities of Daugavpils, Rezekne and Jelgava affected by the attacks of German troops, Izvestia reports. From 50 to 80% of buildings in these settlements were destroyed.

According to the reconstruction plans, a new block layout, a breakdown of straight and wide streets, urban landscaping, and a more rational placement of industrial enterprises were provided. Moscow architects also participated in the development of measures to revitalize the cities of the republic together with Latvian specialists.

"The Germans left piles of ruins on the site of the wonderful Riga seaport. The granite mooring line was blown up, all warehouses and port facilities were burned, cranes were dumped into the water. The whole city is currently rebuilding the port. Factories and plants manufacture tools and equipment," the March 9, 1945 edition says.

There were exactly 61 days left until the Great Victory.

It is noted that the signalmen are working on stretching the telephone line and installing the radio. The work schedule was exceeded.

The material was published as part of the Izvestia special project "80 days to Victory."
