The troops of the 1st Belorussian Front, continuing their offensive, captured the towns of Stargard, Naugard, and Poltsyn on March 5, 1945 — important communication hubs and powerful German defense strongholds. About it on March 6 reports the Izvestia newspaper.

There were exactly 65 days left until the Great Victory.

"Intense fighting continued day and night in the area east of the city of Stargard. The Germans concentrated large military formations in this area. Their task was to stop the movement of Soviet troops to the north at any cost and prevent them from reaching the Baltic Sea coast. The Germans actively solved their task. They threw large groups of infantry, tanks, and aircraft into the fighting. Hitler's troops marched in waves from north to south. Tanks and self—propelled guns appeared behind the artillery rampart in the positions of our glorious infantrymen, drunken German machine gunners ran after them," Izvestia said on March 6, 1945.

In Moscow, at 21:00, the troops of the 1st Belorussian Front were saluted. 20 volleys were fired from 224 guns.

The material is published in the framework of Izvestia's special project "80 days to Victory."
