By 2036, Russia may take a leading position in the field of bioeconomics. This was announced on March 4 by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin at a strategic session on the national project "Technological support for Bioeconomics".

"It is no exaggeration to say that the field we will be engaged in is at the forefront of the technology race, if you will. That's where the most intense rivalry for world leadership is unfolding," he is quoted as saying on the Russian government's Telegram channel.

According to him, the Russian Federation has huge potential, as well as significant volumes and a wide variety of biological resources, which creates a significant competitive advantage.

Mishustin stressed that bioeconomics is actively developing today: more than 225 manufacturers and almost 50 research institutes are working in this field. The Council for the development of the microbiological industry and biotechnologies was also established, which includes over 200 people, including representatives of science and business.

The Prime Minister added that the development of bioeconomics should have a positive impact on the economic dynamics of the country and help achieve national goals. In addition, it will reduce dependence on imports of a number of critical components and increase exports from Russia.

On October 5, 2024, Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the Kurchatov Institute, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, announced that the research center would oversee the development of biotechnologies by the whole country. It is planned to create a scientific and technological center that will help to effectively use natural resources and make breakthroughs in medicine and other fields. It includes a complex of medical primatology, which is located in Sochi.
