The leadership of the European Union (EU) is behind the decision of the Romanian Prosecutor's Office to bring charges against independent presidential candidate Calin Georgescu. This was reported on March 4 by the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR).

"The leadership of the European Union is behind the decision of the Romanian prosecutor's office to charge Georgescu," the report says.

It is clarified that the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen demanded that the current authorities of Bucharest not allow the candidate to vote again after the annulment of the results of the first round. According to the SVR, she threatened to restrict Romania's access to EU funds if Georgescu continued to participate in the election campaign.

It is noted that the European totalitarian-liberal elite fears a "conservative turn of Europe" under the influence of the president USA Donald Trump. The SVR of Russia added that after the "attack on Georgescu," predictions can be made about subsequent attempts by European liberals to suppress dissent in the EU. At the same time, the ministry named Hungary as the first target.

He was later released on his own recognizance. At a rally in Bucharest on March 1, Georgescu stated that will continue to fight for the post of president of the country.

The first round of the Romanian presidential election was held on November 24, 2024. According to official sources, Georgescu was in the lead with 22.94% of votes, but on November 28, the country's Constitutional Court demanded that the Central Election Commission recalculate the results. Their cancelled on December 6th. Repeated elections will be held in Romania on May 4. The second round is scheduled for May 18.
