New European Union (EU) sanctions against Russia will harm European farmers. Esther Errance Garcia, a member of the European Parliament (EP) from Spain, stated this in her address to the European Commission (EC).

"The latest sanctions imposed against Russia...They provide for an increase in tariffs for the import of nitrogen fertilizers to the EU from Russia and Belarus. As a result, prices for such fertilizers are expected to rise, which will increase pressure on EU farmers," the MEP quotes Lenta.Ru .

In this regard, Garcia asked the EC representatives about what actions she intends to take to protect European farmers.

"What actions does the European Commission plan to take to compensate EU farmers as soon as these measures come into force in July 2025?" the author of the appeal asks.

Earlier in the day, political scientist Yuri Svetov told in an interview with 360.ru that the US leadership may lift a number of sanctions against Russia. First of all, restrictions will be removed from goods that Americans themselves want to buy. So, we can talk about titanium, uranium, and also about mineral fertilizers, he believes.

On February 27, agricultural producers of the European Union (EU) predicted that the introduction of protective duties on fertilizer imports from Russia will have a negative impact on the agricultural sector this summer. Based on this, the farmers' union called on the European Commission (EC) to delay the increase in fertilizer duties for a period of one year.

On February 14, Valeria Ivanova, Deputy Director of the GUU Institute of Economics and Finance, said in an interview with RIAMO that the introduction of prohibitive duties on fertilizers from Russia and Belarus in the EU from July 1, 2025 may provoke the agricultural crisis in the EU, as well as lead to higher food prices in Europe.

On February 7, it was reported that the European Union intends to increase duties on Russian fertilizers by 100% by 2028, reports NSN. Earlier, on January 29, EU agricultural producers spoke against new protective duties on fertilizers from Russia, which the European Commission proposed to introduce.

About what the EC is planning introduce duties on agricultural products, nitrogen fertilizers from Russia and Belarus it became known on January 28. It was noted that the tariffs would support the growth of domestic production and the EU fertilizer industry, which suffered during the energy crisis, and would also allow for the diversification of supplies from third countries. At the same time, the EC approved duties on a number of agricultural products from Russia and some nitrogen fertilizers. At the same time, exports of Russian agricultural products and fertilizers to third countries will remain unchanged.
