Floating station "North Pole" has shifted to the east of the Arctic

According to the director of the institute, Alexander Makarov, quoted by Interfax, the floating station usually shifts to the west, not to the east. Now, when it drifts in the eastern sector of the Arctic, specialists have difficulties in preparing the rotation, since the station was at a great distance from the airfields.
However, at the same time, scientists were able to get to the eastern sector of the Arctic, where there had not been regular scientific research for a long time. Thanks to this, experts will be able to get an idea of ice drift and its evolution, as well as learn about the impact of Pacific waters on the Arctic Ocean, notes Bi-port News agency.
It has been established that the process of ice formation has greatly accelerated, and the summer period has become shorter by 7-10 days. The amount of ice in the Arctic has changed, and its regime has also changed. The polar explorers needed to conduct more research so that they could navigate eastward year-round.
The agency clarifies that the North Pole-42 drifting polar expedition began on September 15, 2024. It started from Murmansk. Scientists are conducting research in the high latitudes of the Arctic Ocean. The expedition is expected to last until the spring of 2026.
